Bras and Underwear can be so weird to shop for, right? The title of this blog is ironic for most of us because it often feels like the opposite of wonderful to shop for these little numbers. Let’s be honest, we’ve all secretly seethed that Target puts their thongs on the outside end cap of a main aisle where our new boss at work or new friend at the gym can see us reach for the pink lightning bolt printed number…

Let’s demystify this world of underwear and make it less weird, and actually wonderful.

First, I want to address some questions. The below are the queries I get most about undergarments…

When Is It Time To Get A New Bra?

As someone who loves to make things last, my perspective on this is a bit different than what the google search bar will get you. Often times magazines, blogs, and retailers, tell us 6 months is how long we should wear our bras. I respectfully disagree. Wear your bra until she s no longer doing her job. What is her job? To support your girls, be comfortable, and not cause or have any of the following problems:

bras and when to get a new one
  • The band is too tight even on the last hook. This doesn’t always mean you’ve grown in that direction. It may have to do with how you are washing and drying. More on this later…

  • Straps slipping off shoulders; This may have to with the way your shoulders are built and there are ways to fix the bra and not your shoulders if you want to keep the bra.

  • Creating Back Fat - It’s the bra’s fault, not yours. The bra was probably not designed with smart smoothing features for our back

  • The bra is going for a hike up your shoulder blades…it’s not supposed to do that. BYE

If these things are happening, it’s time for altering (like, take it to a tailor) or moving on. Sustainable ways to get rid of your bra further down.

How Should I Care For My Bras and Undies?

Let’s keep this simple, shall we?

caring for underwear sustainably

If you want your under-roos to last a long time, hand wash and line dry them. DONE

Fill that sink up with Lukewarm water, a nice clean, chemical-free detergent, and the undies; then let them soak. Not hot or cold water, lukewarm water, and don’t let them soak more than an hour. Rinse with cold water. Air dry them on the line, or whatever air dry method you want.

EASY

If you’re set on using the washer and dryer, use a washing bag for intimates and and dry on low heat. Think about it this way: your undergarments have elastic in them, which is plastic, and high heat will slowly melt that. Get it?

How Do I Break Up With Bras and Undies Sustainably?

OK, did you know you can recycle and reuse your old worn out undies and bras?! Say what? I know, sounds weird, and not hygienic, but it is actually possible.

Underwear Second Life:

  1. Recycle Undies with Knickery! They will turn them into insulation - Amazing! Just print a label and ship ‘em.

  2. Use undies as rags several times before they hit the trash can. Who doesn’t need more rags to clean up messes with. Save those paper towels!

  3. Compost, if you’re a pro at that. Must be 100% cotton and have elastic removed

  4. Pillow Stuffing or Dog Cushion stuffing: If you are DIY-ing some pillow projects or cushions for your pup, use old undies as the stuffing. Just clean the undies very well prior to stuffing and then don’t think about it too much.

Bras Second Life:

  1. RECYCLE: The following are great options for recycling your bras:

    1. The Bra Recyclers

    2. Bra Recycling Agency

    3. Free The Girls

  2. Donate: Donate to your local, helper organizations, like women’s restoration homes, homeless shelters, etc. You can also sometimes donate bras to local boutiques in your area, just call them and ask. Remember, when you donate something make sure it is in good enough condition for someone else to wear it.
