The 3 Items I’m Buying During The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale
The 3 Items I’m Buying During The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale?
1. Nothing
2. Not a thing
3. Not buying anything
Sorry, I couldn’t resist .
Look, there is no condemnation from this gal if you have, or will, or are currently purchasing from this yearly Nordstrom love fest. I get it-they have good stuff and it’s marked down and you feel like you are getting a STEAL. Like, you’re literally nervous security is going to stop you and say, “Sorry Ma’am/Sir, that’s basically free compared to the original price, I’m going to have to take you to Nordy’s prison.“ Which probably isn’t that bad of a place…hmmm
Anyways.
Instead of what I’m buying from the sale this year, I thought I would give you my top 3 reasons for not shopping- they may surprise you…enticed?
1. Enough
It’s pretty simple, friends. I truly have enough. That doesn’t mean I will never shop again or can only wear what I already have for the rest of my days in the sun. Hello again, black turtleneck from 9th grade. No, it just means that I am going to think much more considerately before I make a purchase, because I know my wardrobe is not lacking. Sure, I would love more cute fashion stuff because the little hole in my heart that thinks it needs more sometimes screams at me; but,I know better. And I have become better at telling it to stop screaming and take the dog on a walk, or mend my vintage dress, or do something productive. I have enough and I AM enough, without buying more. Deep, I know.
2. Consume, Consume, Consume, Repeat
Here’s a not so fun fact for you and an infographic to go with it:
“According to the Ellen McArthur Foundation, clothing production has approximately doubled in the last 15 years, driven by a growing middle-class population across the globe and increased per capita sales in developed economies. An expected 400 percent increase in world GDP by 2050 will mean even greater demand for clothing(World Resources Institute)”.
Umm need I say more? Once again, not trying to shame anyone, just presenting the facts. We must stop consuming so much. There is so much already out there and so much waste being created because of it. I hope by me refusing to shop this big sale I am taking a small step to inspire big companies to make less, move slower, and think of the greater good. A lot to ask, but a girl can hope!
3. Budget
My husband and dog and I live on a budget. Do we go over on groceries and eating out every month? Maybe. But, we still have it, and we try to stick to it and not justify excess spending. It has been really helpful to see where our money goes every month and I am a big fan of using budgeting as a tool. All this to say, on this budget Brent and I give ourselves a specific and equal amount of “fun money” which we can spend however we want. I spend all of mine every month unless I am saving for something, and B never spends his, like ever. It’s called balance, people. Needless to say, this month I have spent my monthly Fun Money already, so that means, you guessed it, I can’t buy anything else. Even if there is a ginormous sale and all my friends are shopping it and there are some ethically made brands (more on that later..foreshadowing) being sold at Nordstrom-my budget has been used. Thinking of my money more responsibly and not taking from other areas of our finances has taught me so much and made me more conscious of my spending.
There you have it. I technically got you to read this blog post under false pretenses, so, as a gratefulness gesture, I have included a few designers below that sell at Nordstrom and whom I personally support because of their transparent supply chains and fair labor practices. Some of them may be on sale. Just a little nugget for you sweet pals who read all the way down. You’re welcome.
Now, go do something besides online shop! Shoot me an email with your thoughts, or arguments, I love ‘em all! Or, shoot me an email asking me to help you with your wardrobe because if you can’t shop the Nordstrom sale YOU’RE GOING TO LOSE YOUR FREAKING MIND… if you understand that Office reference we are soul siblings.
Xx,
