A Capsule Wardrobe: We’ve talked about this on the blog before - head here to brush up on your Capsule How -To’s. I’ve posted about it loads of time on Instagram, and capsule wardrobe creation is my most requested service. Yet, very few have ever actually completed a legitimate capsule collection in their wardrobe.

Why?

Short answer: Most of us don’t want to live with only 30 pieces in our wardrobe.

We think we do. We think we can totally slim things down, and you CAN…if you are willing to be intentional, consume far less, and say goodbye to the excess in your closet.

The consistent desires of a Capsule Wardrobe are typically:

  1. Efficiency

  2. Ease

  3. Loving everything in your closet

  4. Harmony between all pieces

Those are beautiful and achievable for those willing to really focus on quality long lasting pieces and less in their wardrobe. If the thought of all of that sounds overwhelming, then let me introduce you to Seasonal Capsules.

The seasonal capsule approach can still achieve these desires, but with a little more grace. I like to call it Capsule Adjacent.

A Seasonal Capsule focuses on a specific season of the year or, of your life.

Examples:

  • Spring/ Summer

  • Fall/Winter

  • Maternity

  • Post-Partum

  • Six Month job somewhere with a different climate

You get the idea. These are specific chunks of time in one’s life where a harmonious collection of a minimal amount of clothing can be so helpful.

The approach to creating the seasonal capsule is mostly the same as a year round capsule.

Here is a breakdown:

  1. Identify Your Personal Style - If you need guidance in this category, download my Ideal Personal Style Guide, here.

2. Identify the purpose/season and a color palette

Head here for how to build a wardrobe color palette

Ensuring you know the purpose of your seasonal capsule allows you to be more intentional, and then create a color palette for yourself. Your Color Palette does not need to feel boring or limiting. It is merely to ensure the pieces in your capsule work together. The more pieces that work from a color standpoint, the more outfits you can create.

3. Build a foundation from the clothing you already own

Sort through your wardrobe and determine what you already own that you love. You can create the foundation of your capsule from items you already own and that you already wear often.

4. Create a detailed plan

Before purging your closet, or shopping, ensure you have a plan for what will be in your capsule wardrobe. Include the pieces you already own and the garments to add that will make the capsule complete. Having a plan ensures you will stay within your desired number of garments and wont be distracted by other garments while you’re shopping.

5. If needed, shop and add pieces to make your Seasonal Capsule complete

Shop for the pieces you determined will complete your capsule. Focus on garments that are versatile in how they can be worn, AND in the situations they can be worn. Be willing to take time and be intentional about the quality of the pieces, as you will be wearing them more frequently. If desiring to be more sustainable, remember shop secondhand first, then ethically made brands.

6. Style looks and create a Lookbook

Get creative and make outfits you would actually wear. Style outfits across different aspects of your lifestyle; work, play, weekend, etc. within your ‘season’. Take photos to document the looks and compile them into a ‘Lookbook’. If you’re ever at a loss at what to wear, you can refer to your Lookbook.

If you follow those steps you are on your way to a seasonal capsule. You can do this multiple times throughout the year and your life. The goal is that you would feel like getting dressed every day is a breeze because you know what you own and what outfits you love on yourself.

Happy Capsule-ing!
