Let's Talk About Hats Ba-by...
Did you catch my not so subtle Salt n’ Pepa reference there?
Y’all…HATS. I love them for so many reasons. But, if I’m honest, they save me lots of time caking my hair with dry shampoo. As much as I may love them, many of you are confused by hats when it comes to the WHEN, HOW, WHEN, and WHAT of wearing them. I get asked so often,
“When can I wear a wide brim hat?” or “Is it weird to wear them at night?”.
Short answer: Wear them whenever you want. The secret to knowing if you can wear something is if you feel confident enough to pull it off in that moment. The way you feel about a garment shines through and those who see you don’t question if it is the right setting and instead just notice how cool and confident you look in that hat. There are no “hat rules”.
Now, the WHAT… What hats are a sustainable option?
If you’re like me and love a good hat AND you also pursue shopping vintage, secondhand, and sustainably, then maybe you’ve faced the same challenge I have when sourcing these noggin toppers. Until recently, the hat category was not as easily won over by us ethical fashion lovers, but now we got us some options!
Scroll away my dears. I so hope one of these finds their way atop your pretty heads.
Ferrah
If you scroll no further, it’s fine, because this brand is such a winner. Ferrah makes incredible hats, right here in Texas where yours truly lives.
“Ferrah is an eco-luxury fashion brand designed in Texas. The word “Ferrah” comes from the Arabic root f-r-h “for “joy, merriment, or happiness.”
Firstly, these hats are stylin’. The compliments you will receive can become overwhelming, so be ready to blush or bask in it. You do not have to sacrifice style or quality when you invest in one of these gems.
“The FERRAH team creates with only natural fibers and generates minimal to zero waste in the production of each collection. FERRAH aims to perpetually strive to achieve inclusivity, transparency, and sustainability from concept to creation.”
Yellow 108
Not a brand I own personally, but I have perused and placed on my noggin when in stores a few times. They are made in Los Angeles from “salvaged and recycled“ materials, according to their website. From my own experience and their online offerings, you get style, quality, and durability with these hats. They have quite a variety also!
Lack Of Color
Another favorite with such great quality and amazing styles available. From straw to felt and fedora to bucket hat - such a variety. I’ll just let you read about their ethics for yourself:
“Our hats are hand-made in various places around the world by different skilled artisan groups. We regularly visit our factories to ensure sustainable and ethical practices are being upheld and trace all elements of the supply chain to ensure LOC hats are being responsibly made and materials responsibly sourced. The straw and palm we use for our straw hats is sustainably grown and replenished and re-grown for future use. Our wool is 100% Australian wool. In buying LOC hats you are supporting local resources and talent and in turn, supporting families and their way of life…”
Vintage and Secondhand
If you would rather go the pre-loved route, I support you fully! Here are a few of my favorite options:
No Carnations - Wonderful vintage dealer and seller of classic, lovely, vintage hats
The RealReal and Poshmark - If you’re not using these, you are MISSING OUT. Such good secondhand databases of all clothing, hats included.
That’s a wrap on this list - Comment below on what other product categories you’re curious about finding ethical options for your wardrobe! If you want a more sustainable wardrobe, but don’t have time to do all the research and shopping yourself, head over to this page to see if I can help with that!
Yours in hats,
Xx,
